HOW TO STORE MUSHROOMS

Mushrooms are one of the tastiest, most versatile vegetables to cook, so don’t make the mistake of letting them go to waste. There are plenty of ways you can preserve the quality of your mushrooms for longer; discover some of our tips and tricks below.

STORING MUSHROOMS FOR A SHORT WHILE

To prolong the freshness of your mushrooms, we suggest placing them in a paper bag. This will allow the bag to absorb any excess moisture and stop them from getting mouldy. Storing mushrooms in the original packaging and placing these in the main compartment in the fridge will also ensure they last a full week.

HOW TO STORE DRIED MUSHROOMS

Dried mushrooms can last for up to a whole year and are very low maintenance. If your freezer space is limited, try drying mushrooms instead and reap longer lasting results.

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 150 degrees.
  2. Gather your fresh mushrooms and slice them into ½ inch cubes.
  3. Arrange your sliced mushrooms onto an oven tray covered with a baking sheet and leave a suitable gap between them
  4. Place the tray into the oven and let cook for an hour.
  5. After an hour, flip them over and continue to keep drying. Keep this up until your mushrooms are completely dry.
  6. A helpful tip is to leave your oven slightly ajar to allow the moisture from your mushrooms to escape.
  7. Once the mushrooms are suitably dry and crisp, place them in an airtight container and store them in a dark, dry place.

HOW TO STORE FROZEN MUSHROOMS

Mushrooms that are frozen can last for 6-8 months and can be chucked into any dish straight from the freezer, making the process super easy and effective.

  1. Mushrooms should be cooked before freezing in order to stay intact whilst frozen. Therefore, wash your mushrooms in cold water and slice them into cubes that are around ½ inch thick.
  2. Sauté with butter or oil for five minutes to cook the mushrooms through. Take them out when most of the liquid in the pan has evaporated.
  3. Proceed to lay your mushrooms out onto a baking sheet and allow them cool to room temperature.
  4. Once cooled, move your mushrooms from the sheet to a small container and then freeze.
  5. Ensure that your container is air tight as mushrooms can be prone to freezer burn.

TOP TIPS

Be sure not to store your mushrooms in places that are too moist. This includes the vegetable drawer in the fridge, as it will lead to your mushrooms spoiling quickly.

Don’t place your mushrooms near foods with a strong odour; they absorb aromas like a sponge which causes them to expire quicker.

Take good care of your mushrooms; try to keep them in one piece without much squishing and bruising, or they won’t keep for very long.
